What You Need To Know About Summer Safety for Kids

For sun safety:

One of the easiest steps you can take to prevent sunburn and skin damage later is to make sure your child wears sunscreen when outside. The sunscreen should be at least SPF 15, or SPF 30 to 50 if your child is fair-skinned and burns easily. Other steps to prevent sunburn are to have your child wear a hat and sunglasses while outside in the sun. Make sure your child stays hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

For water safety: 

Remember that drowning is one of the most common causes of fatalities, especially among children. Don’t ever leave your child unattended in or near the water. Always make sure your child wears a life jacket while in a boat or near the water. If you have a small child, make sure your child wears a swim diaper to prevent the spread of germs in public swimming areas.

For house and yard safety: 

It’s easy to forget about your house and yard, but they can be hazardous areas too, so make sure your child wears footwear and avoids going barefoot. Keep your child away from fire, including barbecues, fire pits, and campfires. Keep your child away from animals that can bite or scratch.

For car safety: 

Always make sure your child is in the appropriate car seat and that the car seat is correctly positioned. If your child is too old for a car seat, make sure your child is wearing a seatbelt. Don’t forget your child will mimic what you do, so be sure you are wearing a seatbelt too.
