What Parents Should Know About Pediatric Sick Visits
At Mid-Kansas Pediatric Associates in East Wichita, West Wichita, and Derby, KS, we know sick visits can feel stressful because symptoms can change quickly and kids often feel poorly at the least convenient times. We’ve built our daily scheduling to support urgent, same-day care for many common childhood illnesses and injuries, so you can get answers and treatment without unnecessary delays.
We use sick visits to evaluate new or worsening symptoms, determine the cause, and start treatment when your child needs it. We assess vital signs, hydration, breathing, ear and throat findings, lung sounds, abdominal tenderness, and skin changes. We also ask focused questions about symptom timing, exposure risks, medications, and recent travel or school outbreaks. This approach helps us distinguish viral illnesses from conditions that need specific medications or closer follow-up.
Parents commonly call us when a fever, cough, sore throat, ear pain, vomiting, or diarrhea disrupts sleep and daily routines. We also see kids for rashes, abdominal pain, headaches, painful swallowing, and injuries that need evaluation. We often recommend a visit when symptoms persist, intensify, or prevent normal eating, drinking, or activity.
We treat many non-life-threatening problems in our office, but some situations need an ER or 911. Seek emergency care right away for severe trouble breathing, blue lips, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected severe dehydration, serious head injury with concerning symptoms, or any symptom that looks life-threatening. For fever guidance, we also take age and severity seriously, including fever higher than 100.4°F in infants under 2 months, fever at or over 104°F in older children, or fevers that last more than two days.
We choose testing based on symptoms and exam findings. When it helps, we use in-office testing to confirm illnesses and guide next steps. We also focus on supportive care that makes kids feel better faster, including hydration strategies, fever management guidance, and targeted symptom relief. If we diagnose a bacterial infection, we prescribe appropriate medication and explain what improvement should look like, plus when to follow up. If we see warning signs that suggest a higher-risk condition, we always coordinate next steps quickly.
Bring a short symptom timeline and note the highest temperature, how you measured it, and what medicines you gave. Also track fluid intake and urine output, since hydration status matters during sick visits. If your child takes daily medications or has allergies, bring that list. For injuries, share how the injury happened and what movement causes pain.
