Why Ear Infections Are Common in Children: A Pediatrician’s Perspective

If your child has ever tugged at their ear, complained of ear pain, or struggled with fussiness after a cold, you’re not alone. Ear infections are one of the most common reasons parents bring their children to the pediatrician. At Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates in Wichita and Derby, KS, our team helps families understand why these infections happen so frequently in children and what can be done to manage them.

Why Ear Infections Are So Common in Kids

There are a few key reasons why ear infections occur more often in children than in adults:

  • Eustachian tube anatomy – Children’s eustachian tubes (the small passages that connect the middle ear to the back of the throat) are shorter, narrower, and more horizontal than in adults. This makes it easier for fluid to get trapped and harder for it to drain properly.

  • Immature immune systems – A child’s immune system is still developing, which means they are more likely to catch colds and respiratory infections that can lead to ear infections.

  • Exposure to germs – Children who attend daycare or school are often exposed to more germs, increasing their risk of upper respiratory infections that can cause ear problems.

Common Symptoms to Watch For

Ear infections can sometimes be hard to detect, especially in babies and toddlers. Symptoms may include:

  • Ear pain or tugging at the ear

  • Fussiness, irritability, or trouble sleeping

  • Fever

  • Fluid draining from the ear

  • Trouble hearing or responding to sounds

When to See a Pediatrician

While many ear infections can resolve on their own, some require treatment. You should schedule a visit if your child has:

  • Persistent ear pain

  • Fever with ear discomfort

  • Trouble hearing or balance issues

  • Repeated ear infections within a short time

A pediatrician can evaluate the ear with an otoscope and determine if antibiotics or other treatments are needed.

Prevention and Care

Although ear infections can’t always be avoided, parents can take steps to reduce the risk:

  • Encourage good handwashing to limit the spread of colds

  • Avoid secondhand smoke, which can irritate the eustachian tubes

  • Keep your child up to date on vaccinations, including the flu shot and pneumococcal vaccine

  • Breastfeeding during infancy may also help strengthen the immune system
