How Pediatricians Screen for Newborn Hearing and Vision
From the very beginning of life, your baby’s senses play a big role in how they learn, grow, and connect with the world. At Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates, with locations in Wichita and Derby, Kansas, we take early hearing and vision screening seriously. These checks are simple, safe, and important steps in supporting your baby’s healthy development from day one.
Newborns depend on hearing and sight to bond with loved ones, recognize voices, and begin learning language. While many babies are born with normal hearing and vision, some may have issues that are not obvious at birth. Because early treatment can make a big difference, screening is done soon after delivery and then repeated at regular well-baby visits.
Hearing screenings often happen in the hospital shortly after birth. These tests are quick and painless. One common method is the OAE (otoacoustic emissions) test, which uses soft sounds and sensors to measure how well the inner ear responds. Another method is the ABR (auditory brainstem response) test, which checks how the brain reacts to sound. If a baby doesn’t pass the initial screening, a follow-up test will be scheduled. It doesn’t always mean there’s hearing loss, but it’s important to know for sure.
While babies aren’t given full eye exams right away, pediatricians check their eyes from the start. At newborn and infant visits, we look for signs of healthy eye development, proper alignment, and response to light and movement. As your child grows, we continue to monitor for conditions like lazy eye, crossed eyes, or trouble focusing. Vision screening with charts or tools usually begins around age three, or earlier if concerns arise.
