How to Communicate Your Child’s Symptoms Effectively During Sick Visits

When your child isn’t feeling well, it’s natural to feel concerned and eager to help them feel better quickly. At Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates, with offices in Wichita and Derby, Kansas, our pediatric team works closely with parents to make each sick visit as helpful and efficient as possible. One of the best ways to support your child’s care is by clearly sharing their symptoms, even if they’re hard to describe.

Start With the Basics

Before the visit, take a few moments to write down your child’s symptoms. Include when they started, how they’ve changed, and what seems to make them better or worse. For example, if your child has a fever, try to note the highest temperature and when it was taken. If they’re coughing, describe the sound, how often it occurs, and whether it disrupts their sleep or eating. Even small details can help the pediatrician narrow down the cause and choose the best treatment.

Describe Behavior and Mood

Children, especially younger ones, can’t always explain how they feel. Try to notice how their behavior has changed. Are they more tired than usual, refusing food, or not playing like they normally do? These changes are important clues. If your child is old enough to talk, ask them how their body feels and use their words during the visit. Saying things like, “She told me her throat feels scratchy,” or “He says his tummy feels weird,” gives the provider a better sense of what’s going on.

Ask Questions and Take Notes

During the visit, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification. If you’re unsure about a diagnosis or treatment plan, it’s okay to speak up. Taking notes or asking the provider to write down instructions can also help once you’re home. The more confident you feel about your child’s care, the better you’ll be able to support their recovery.
