Strep Throat in Kids: What Parents Should Know

Child-with-Strep-Throat-is-Examined-by-Pediatrician

Mid-Kansas Pediatric Associates has multiple physicians available to help with various childhood diseases. For instance, if your child has a sore throat, it could be an infection called Strep Throat. We are happy to schedule your child for evaluation at any of our three locations. This common condition is very painful and often requires various types of treatments. Understanding what this condition requires can help minimize serious reactions.

What Is Strep?

Children with this throat problem suffer from a bacterial infection from group A strep. It causes a serious sore throat that will often get worse. While it can impact adults and children, children often struggle with the many symptoms it can cause.

What are the Symptoms Of Strep?

Beyond a fast-acting sore throat (usually one that happens very suddenly and without warning), this bacterial infection can cause painful swallowing, making it hard for children to eat or drink. Just a few other reactions it might trigger in children or teens with strep include:

  • A fever (usually not too intense but may worsen the longer it’s not treated)
  • Red and swollen tonsils that may also have white patches or streaks on the sides
  • Swollen and painful neck glands or lymph nodes that might be visibly larger
  • Severe headaches that might come and go as this condition worsens in a child
  • Stomach pain, nausea, loss of appetite, or vomiting
  • A serious rash that spreads across the skin (might be scarlet fever, a serious issue)

At Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates, we understand just how serious strep throat is and how much it can affect your child's quality of life. This very contagious condition can spread rapidly throughout schools and even between you and your children very quickly. Thankfully, we can provide a rapid strep test to identify this problem.

How Is It Treated?

Once we’ve diagnosed strep, we will provide antibiotic medicines to help improve your child’s recovery. We are happy to provide the care and attention that they need. With our help, they should start seeing progress by the second or third day of care.

Take This Problem Seriously

Just because strep happens often doesn’t mean it should be ignored. At Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates, we can help children with strep throat to avoid serious side effects.
