How Often Does Your Child Need a Physical? A Guide for Parents

Child-Physicals

Contact one of our doctors at Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates to schedule your child's physicals in Wichita and Derby, KS.

What Happens During Child Physicals?

Regular physicals are recommended for every member of your household. Your child is certainly no exception to that. Pediatric physicals offer numerous benefits to help your child stay in good condition.

The main benefit of regular child physicals is injury and illness prevention.

During these appointments, the pediatrician can examine your child’s hearing, vision, and other senses and check for any signs of potential problems. If any worrying symptoms surface during those physicals, you can expect the pediatrician to address them as soon as possible.

The injury and illness prevention efforts implemented by your pediatrician will also include checking essential health markers such as blood pressure, and may include lab work as necessary. Those check-ups can help detect any diseases developing in your child.

Development tracking is another important aspect of child physicals. Doctors will measure your child’s height and weight to determine if they align with expectations for other kids in their age group.

Your child’s doctor will also examine the health of their musculoskeletal system. They will perform examinations to ascertain the health of your child’s joints. Any musculoskeletal injuries causing your child discomfort should also emerge during these examinations.

Note that these physicals aren’t just recommended for keeping your child healthy. Kids may also need to pass physicals to participate in certain activities. To be more specific, schools and youth organizations often require kids to undergo physicals before they are allowed to participate in sports events.

How Often Should My Child Undergo Physicals?

Unlike with well-child visits, there is no set schedule for child physicals. The ideal schedule for physicals can vary from one child to the next based on various factors.

Annual physicals should suffice if your child is around when they can start attending school. During your child’s teenage years, they may only need a physical once every two years. More physicals may be recommended if your child has a chronic condition.
