Common Childhood Illnesses

It is not uncommon for kids to get sick often, especially younger children who have not yet developed immunity to certain illnesses. Kids also tend to touch things in their environment quite a bit, which can expose them to a lot of germs. The experienced and caring pediatricians at Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates in East Wichita, West Wichita, and Derby, KS, diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses to help kids feel better again as soon as possible.

Illnesses That Commonly Affect Kids

Most children encounter a wide range of illnesses while growing up. Although it is no fun to see your kids feeling sick, exposure to common illnesses does help the immune system to produce antibodies and develop immunity. As children get older and their immune systems become stronger, many kids tend to get sick less often.

Common childhood illnesses your kids might face at some point include:

  • Ear infections
  • Common cold
  • Influenza (flu)
  • Sinusitis (sinus infection)
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
  • Hand, foot, and mouth disease
  • Gastroenteritis (stomach flu)
  • Strep throat
  • Bronchitis

When To See a Pediatrician

Sometimes it can be difficult to know when your sick child simply needs to stay home and rest or should see a doctor. Many common childhood illnesses will clear up soon enough with plenty of rest and remaining hydrated. Over-the-counter medications can also help by providing relief from symptoms, such as mild pain or discomfort. However, it is always a good idea to call the doctor’s office to discuss your child’s symptoms and find out if a sick visit is needed.

If your little one is feeling ill, a pediatrician at our East Wichita, West Wichita, or Derby, KS, office can advise you if an in-person sick visit is needed. If not, the doctor can provide guidance for managing symptoms at home until your child is well again. You should always contact us right away if your child is dehydrated, has a high fever, or has difficulty breathing. Additionally, call the doctor whenever your child is sick if they also have a chronic condition, such as asthma or diabetes, or have a suppressed immune system.

Whenever your child is sick, we are here to help. To schedule a sick visit with a pediatrician, contact Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates in East Wichita, West Wichita, or Derby, KS, by calling (316) 634-2000 for East Wichita, (316) 773-3100 for West Wichita, or (316) 719-2001 for the Derby office.
