Why Does My Child Get Ear Infections?

We see patients of all ages with ear infections, but they are most common in babies and young children. 80% of children experience at least one ear infection before the age of three, and they are common up to the age of eight. Babies' immune systems are still developing and have a harder time fighting off bacterial infections. As the child grows up, the ears get better at draining fluids and the immune system strengthens, helping prevent ear infections. You can still get an ear infection at any age, most commonly when you are congested with a cold and fluid builds up behind your eardrums.

Ear infections cause earache, fever, and a sore throat or stuffy nose. Some ear infections can clear on their own, but when you are uncomfortable and need treatment or your child is suffering, we can help.

What Can I Expect During Ear Infection Treatment?

If your child has an ear infection, call Mid-Kansas Pediatric Associates for an appointment. Our doctor will examine the eardrum for infection and ask about symptoms to determine the best treatment.

Commonly, your doctor will prescribe medication that kills the bacteria causing the infection. At home, your child may still have symptoms for 2-3 days as the medicine works to eradicate the bacteria. Make sure all the doses of the antibiotic are taken, even after symptoms improve.

A warm compress on the ear for 20 minutes at a time can also help relieve the ache. If the fever doesn't subside in two days, or the ear pain does not go away within three days, call us back.
